Although it's in the past, academic writing in most is no longer as fancy as it used to be. To be successful in college writing, you do not only have to use formal language in your writing. Even though academic writing can relies on complex sentences, and large words, its surprising how often writing includes language from the streets, popular culture, different communities and homes. When you mix all these languages the idea of "standard" English changes changes and more opportunities as writers grow.
2a) In The Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln uses a formal language to speak to his audience. In his writing you can sense conviction and his persuasion to deliver his message. From reading this passage you can also sense his emotion in order to convince them of a common goal, freedom. He also repeats some of his sentence structure to get his point across even more so.
2b) The sport of swimming has been around for many years, but little regonition has been made. The sport has produced numerous of the great athletes that the country and world have come to admire including Mark Spitz and Micheal Phelps. But still the football game will have more air time on tv, but still swimming will be seen as an "activity" and not a "real sport", but still professional swimmers will never be paid the same amount as other profession athletes Swimmers put hours and hours into this sport in order to make a difference and get the sport attention. We will keep working, until swimming gets the attention it deserves.
