1. For number 1 on this assignment I am rewriting the second paragraph on p. 93 from They Say/ I Say.
This chapter shows you a ton of moves that you can make in your writing to answer the "who cares?" and "so what?"questions. If you think about it, these questions basically get at the same thing: the importance of what you are saying. Even though they take you to the same end point, they get to the main point in different ways. "Who cares?" literally asks you who will care about what you're saying, and "so what?" asks how you can use your information in the real world. First, were gonna look at some ways to make it clear who cares.
2. For number 2 on this assignment I am using Ambrose Bierce's passage from The Devil's Dictionary.
This passage by Ambrose Bierce has very different writing style than most of the other paragraphs written in this chapter. The writer use's certain words and gives them his own definition in order to make his point. Bierce's sentence structure remains consistant throughout his passage. He writes as if he is literally writing definitions in a dictionary: the bolded word, the type of word, and then his made up definition. His tone is a bit dreary and somber throught his writing.
3. For number 2 on this assignment I am using Ambrose Bierce's passage from The Devil's Dictionary.
College, n. The place where many spend their years after high school dwindling away their parentsmoney, only to eventually to become a Target employee.
Owen Hall, n. The residence hall on Purdue's campus which holds the souls of its miserable tennants in a locked boiler room on the first floor.
Reading, v. A professors main weapon of mass destruction.
Fitness, n. Your coaches opinion of the work you did over winter break, or lack there of.
Team mates, n. The people that will steal your thunder.
