Marking and judging formal and mechanical errors in student papers is a area of multiple-personality disorder. Our mellow student-centered process based selves tend to condemn marking formal errors at all. This represents the Bad Old Days. Some detail work is useless. The standards are inhuman and make students feel stupid, wrong, trivial, and misunderstood.
