1. Pg 121 first paragraph-- Have you ever gotten the impression that writting well in college means setting aside the kind of language you use in everyday conversation? That to impress your ininstructors you need to use big words, long sentences, and complex sentence structures? If so, we're here to tell you that aint true. Actually, academic writting can- and we think should- be relaxed, easy to follow, and even a little bit fun. But, we dont want to suggest that you avoid using big, fancy words in your writting, we encourage you to use the kinds of expressions and turns of phrase that you use everyday when talking with you family and friends. In this chapter, we want to show you how you can write effective academic arguments while holding on to some of your own voice.

2a. Beer can by John Updike is talking about how the new beer cans arn't as good as the old ones. He first talks about how great the old beer cans were, and then how not so great beer cans are now. He exagerrates both points, it was a more laid back tone. He uses alot of detail and adjectives in describing everything.

2b. Alot of kids go away to college and live in the dorms freshman year, but that is not as good as livign at home. At home you got your childhood friends who you always hangout with, you always have food in the refigerator to snack on. You have a nice comfertable bed to sleep in and get read bedtime stories by your mommy. Living in the dorms is crampted with two kids living in a small area. You might get an annoying roomate who is from New York and loves the Giants.
