Pg.125
Paragraph 2

While one effect of mixing languages like this is to give your writing more meaning, another is to make a political statement about the way, for example, society values some languages more than others. For instance, in the titles of two of her books, Talkin and Testifyin: The Language of Black America and Black Talk: Words and phrases from the hood of Amen Corner, the language learner Geneva Smitherman mixes African American slang with more forml language in order to suggest, as she specifically argues in these books, that black english slang is a language in itself just like "standard" english is considered a language.

John Updike: Beer Can

This writing style is very descriptive, the author uses many adjetives to paint a picture in your head of what he is describing. He describes a beer can in such detail, and describes the can in ways many dont think of such as "a tranquil cylinder of delightfully resonant metal" This writing sounds different than other writing styles because it doesn't just describe somethin and move on. It takes the whole paragraph to break down and describe one object in so much detail the reader can picture the object in front of them. The word choice is very descriptive, the tone of this paragraph is positive and uplifting. the author is trying to describe an object that makes him happy, he describes the beer can in such a way that he wants other people to recieve the same joy out of a beer can as he does.

2b.

What could possibly feel better than a dead cow on your hand? the baseball players kryptonite is that brand new leather smell just waiting to be spit on with various flavors of gatorade, chewing tobacco, and oiled up like girls on spring break. the baseball glove is more than just a glove to the player. It is the heart and soul of the game. It is to the player as the lightsaber is to a jedi, without it you are not the same person. There are rules and regulations to a baseball players glove. it is as precious as a diamond and as personal as a momma joke.
